Crisis Counselor - 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Schedule

30 hrs of crisis and mental health in-service training


Waubonsie Mental Health Center is seeking a Crisis Counselor that will work within our Crisis Stabilization Residential Services (CSRS) will encourage the clients to implement their treatment plan developed by the mental health professional and encourages the client to develop support in a home-like setting. The Crisis Counselors duties will include responsibilities for maintaining the crisis house, to include but not limited to meal preparation, house keeping, and skill teaching. The Crisis Counselor will be required to complete trainings to provide appropriate mental health support services.


Job Duties

  • Greet and treat clients, families, and team members in a friendly, supportive manner
  • Complete day-to-day housekeeping tasks, which include but are not limited to meal preparation, laundry, cleaning and all other duties assigned
  • Encourage clients to implement crisis de-escalation skills and build positive supports
  • Monitor, assess and document client’s participation in treatment activities and passing of medications
  • Obtain and maintain knowledge of policies and procedures regarding emergency or crisis situations along with required documentation such as incident reports, medication management etc.
  • Implement a treatment plan provided by the mental health professional and seek guidance from the mental health professional with any concerns or questions regarding implementation of the treatment plan
  • Consistent attendance to all mandatory meetings and required trainings (WMHC Staff Meeting – quarterly and Turning Pointe Staff Meeting – monthly)
  • Report any issues and concerns to the appropriate supervisor
  • Provide transportation to and from appointments, when necessary
  • Interact and network in the community to obtain resources

Positions Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree with 30 semester hours or equivalent in a human services field (including, but not limited to, psychology, social work, nursing, education) and a minimum of 1 year of experience in behavioral or mental health services; or
  • Law enforcement officer with a minimum of 2 years experience in the law enforcement officer’s field; or
  • Emergency medical Technician (EMT) with a minimum of 2 years experience in the EMT’s field
  • A peer support specialist with a minimum of 1 year experience in behavioral or mental health services; or
  • A family support peer specialist with a  minimum of 1 year experience in behavioral or mental health services; or
  • A Registered Nurse with a minimum of 1 year experience in behavioral or mental health services; or
  • A bachelor’s degree in a non-human services-related field, associate’s degree, or high school diploma (or equivalency) with a minimum of 2 years experience in behavioral or mental health services, and 30 hours of crisis and mental health in-service training (in addition to the required 30 hours of department-approved training)
  • Complete trainings of up to 60 hours, depending on experience. These trainings may consist of Mental Health First Aid, Medication Manager Certificate, Adult Dependent Abuse Certification, Food Safety, Confidentiality/Ethics, and/or Verbal De-Escalation Interventions.


  • General knowledge of various mental health disorders and best practices and an understanding of environmental and cultural factors that affect those with a mental illness
  • Ability to communicate in a team setting in a positive manner
  • Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the community, professionals, and clients
  • Ability to effectively use interviewing skills including motivational interviewing
  • Ability to use computers and complete documentation to complete and meet the CSRS Chapter 24 guidelines and timelines regarding reports and other paperwork
  • Ability to interpret state rules and guidelines, which deal with providing and delivering crisis stabilization services

Other Requirement:

  • Valid Drivers’ License, with good driving record

  • Extensive Background Check, also Dependent Adult and Child Abuse registries, Sex Offender registry, and Criminal History Check
